Daryl Kootenay – Community Champion

Daryl Kootney is a traditional dancer, singer, artist, speaker, filmmaker, and youth worker from the Stoney Nakoda Nation in the Treaty 7 Territory in Southern Alberta. He is also a member of the Dine (Navajo) Nation in New Mexico from his father’s heritage.

Daryl’s Work

Daryl has spent most of his adult life serving and supporting youth in his local community and worldwide. He travelled as a volunteer with Canada World Youth (CWY), working with youth throughout Africa, Peru, and Nicaragua. Daryl started participating in the program before becoming an intern and employee.

In 2022, Daryl led a fourth youth delegation from his Nation and CWY to the United Nations World Conference of Indigenous Peoples and the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Rights. He also attended the Young Global Diplomat Forum in London, England, in 2019.

Most recently, Daryl has committed much of his time to working with youth from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation and kids in the Bow Valley area. He co-founded the Stoney Nakoda Youth Council and co-convenor of the Mni Ki Wakan: World Indigenous Decade of Water Summit. Daryl also serves as a group leader for The Howl Experience.

Daryl also dedicates his time, focus and expertise to boosting awareness and engaging with Truth and Reconciliation efforts and programs in the Bow Valley.

Daryl attended the World Food Forum (WFF) in Rome, Italy, in October 2024. The WFF is an independent network of partners hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It is a global platform that actively shapes agrifood systems for a better food future. The WFF’s goal is to achieve a more sustainable, resilient, inclusive and hunger-free future for all.

Gloria’s Dream Tree is inspired by Daryl’s leadership and knowledge. We are honoured to learn about and support his meaningful work and journey.
